Mountain Gorilla Trekking - Rwanda's Premier Experience: Rwanda is one of only three countries (along with Uganda and DRC) where critically endangered mountain gorillas can be visited in wild. Trekkers must be 15+ years old, healthy (illness risks transmitting to gorillas), wear long pants and long sleeves, bring rain gear and sturdy boots (mountain terrain, mud, vegetation). Encounters are profoundly moving - gorillas are habituated to humans and go about their lives (feeding, playing, grooming) ignoring tourists. Photography allowed (no flash). Conservation success story - mountain gorilla population increasing due to protection and eco-tourism funding. Base in Musanze/Ruhengeri town (2 hours from Kigali, accommodation $30-300+/night). Kigali - Africa's Cleanest and Safest City: Kigali, Rwanda's capital, consistently ranks as Africa's cleanest city due to strict cleanliness policies and community participation. Monthly community service (Umuganda) on last Saturday of each month sees citizens cleaning streets and doing community projects (businesses and transport closed 8am-12pm, tourists generally exempt but respectful participation welcome). Plastic bags are strictly banned in Rwanda - airport searches confiscate plastic bags at entry (violators face fines or imprisonment). The ban has dramatically reduced litter. Kigali is also remarkably safe - violent crime against tourists is rare, walking at night generally safe in main areas (normal precautions apply), police presence visible, and locals friendly and helpful. The city has modern infrastructure, reliable internet, craft beer scene, good restaurants (French-African fusion cuisine), and growing middle class. Key sites include Kigali Genocide Memorial (powerful museum with mass graves, entry free but donations appreciated - essential visit for understanding Rwanda, allow 2-3 hours), colorful neighborhoods (Nyamirambo Muslim quarter with street food and nightlife), craft markets (Caplaki Craft Village for souvenirs), and Inema Arts Centre (contemporary Rwandan art). Accommodation ranges from hostels ($15-25/night) to mid-range hotels ($50-100) to luxury ($150-400+). Kigali is walkable in center but hilly terrain and spread-out attractions make motorcycle taxis (moto - $1-3 short trips, negotiate price, helmets provided) useful. Uber-like apps SafeMotos and Yego available. Kigali is pleasant base for exploring Rwanda. Most visitors arrive via Kigali International Airport (10km from center, taxi $20-30). Allow 1-2 days for city exploration.

1994 Genocide Memorial Sites and Historical Context: The 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000-1,000,000 people (primarily Tutsi minority and moderate Hutu) over 100 days (April-July 1994). The genocide ended when the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) led by current president Paul Kagame captured Kigali. Rwanda has since focused on reconciliation, justice (Gacaca community courts), and memorialization. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the main memorial site with museum documenting events leading to genocide, the 100 days of killing, aftermath, and regional genocides context (Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia). Mass graves contain 250,000+ victims. The memorial is sobering, educational, and emotionally intense - essential for understanding Rwanda's history and remarkable recovery. Entry free (donations appreciated). Other genocide memorial sites include Nyamata and Ntarama churches (sites of massacres, preserved as they were found with victims' clothing, bullet holes), and Murambi Genocide Memorial (school where 50,000+ killed, some bodies preserved with lime). Visiting genocide sites is emotionally difficult but provides crucial context for Rwanda's current focus on unity, development, and reconciliation. Rwandan government policy promotes national identity over ethnic labels - identity cards no longer show ethnicity. Discussing the genocide requires sensitivity - Rwandans are generally willing to share experiences but approach topic respectfully. April (genocide commemoration month) sees memorials and ceremonies - travel possible but emotional period.
